It’s a well-known fact that handmade rugs are stunning, last for many years and they are somewhat costly in contrast to machine-made oriental rugs.

Sounds simple, right? But it’s easy to get caught up in the details and totally lose track of what you’re supposed to be shopping for. So, let’s keep it simple. The rug shape should generally match the table shape. Use this chart to help you.
Make sure you know the dimensions of your dining table. You’ll want to measure the length and width of the tabletop.
Then measure again with the chairs pulled out. The idea is to make enough space so that the chairs don’t fall off the rug when your guests scoot backward.
Next, take a look at the whole room and all the furniture in it. Consider whether you want your new rug to be big enough to include other furniture pieces. In general, we recommend leaving about 20” of space between the rug and the wall.
Use this handy box to write down your measurements.
It might be tempting to use a traditional rug with a medallion design in the center. But you may find that your beautiful design is awkwardly covered up once placed under the table. That’s why most designers recommend an allover design. An allover provides a consistent pattern underneath the table and chairs. You’ll find so many gorgeous options too. Allover patterns are found throughout the rug-making world, so you’ll have your pick of color, design and origin.
The colors you choose play a significant role in defining the space. Light neutral colors are versatile and can serve as an anchor for all the pieces in the dining room. But, as you know, neutrals don’t hide spills and stains.
Instead, look around the room at your accent pieces - a coveted vase, upholstery, wall hangings, and unique furniture pieces. Choose a color that brings out your accent colors. This will add depth to the room.
Bold colors are also a great choice if you’d like your one-of-a-kind vintage rug to be the centerpiece, and of course, hide those nasty stains.
This probably goes without saying, but try to find a rug that is suitable for the amount of wear and tear you expect. For example, if your dining room is off-limits to the kids or used only for special occasions, you might be okay with a silk rug. On the other hand, if you’re expecting lots of use - everyday meals, entertaining guests - then consider shopping for rugs made of more durable and easy-to-clean wool and cotton. Low pile and flat weave rugs are also going to be your best choice here as opposed to harder-to-clean high pile rugs and rugs made of natural fibers, like jute and seagrass.
