In 5 minutes, you can measure exactly the right size for your rug by simply using a measuring tape.
Measure the length and width of the room and the area where you actually want to place the rug. The rug size should be proportional to the room size.
For the living room, measure the size of the seating area. For a bedroom, measure the bed. For a dining area, measure the dining table with chairs pulled out.
Leave 8 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. Otherwise, a rug too big will end up looking like a wall to wall carpet.
The best way to be absolutely sure of the rug size is to use a painter’s tape to mark the rug’s border. Live with it for a day and decide whether you like the size or would rather size up or down.
Your living room rug should be large enough to anchor your seating area. It shouldn’t look like a postage stamp floating in a large space. As a rule, at least the front legs of your furniture should sit on the rug. For bigger rooms, all the legs can sit on the rug to create visual compartmentalization.

Shop 10’x14’ RugsThe rug always revolves around your bed. The size of the bed determines the rug size. The rug should extend at least 18 to 24 inches on the sides of the bed. For king size beds, 9’x12’ rugs and 8’x10’ rugs for queen size beds are ideal. If you prefer to have a bare floor under the bed, runner rugs on the sides will do just fine.

The one rule that matters for a dining room rug is that chairs must stay on the rug even when they are pulled out. Leave 24 to 36 inches of rug beyond the table on every side so the back legs of the chairs never catch the edge.

Shop 5’x8’ RugsAvoid the following mistakes while choosing a rug to get the perfect rug size.
A rug that is too small will make your place look cramped. Your furniture will look like it is floating around the rug. Which is not a pretty scene, mind you.
The most important thing you will consider besides the size is the furniture placement. A rug that works for a single sofa will not work for an L shaped sectional. If you have a side table near the bed, it should also go on the rug.
This applies to dining room rugs. Most people forget to measure the space required when you pull out a chair to sit. If the chair isn’t on the rug when pulled out, it will become lopsided and can even cause someone to fall off if they put too much weight on the backrest.
When you place a rug near a door, make sure the pile height is low. Otherwise, every time you open the door, the rug will bunch up or fold.
